2010

What happened to our little boy?

Someone transformed our little boy
into a teenager! He's taller than Mom, developing a wicked sense of humor,
and very independent. Thankfully
he's still an all-around good guy.

2011

Despite the warnings his teachers gave that this year would be a killer, Zack is doing very well in school (all honors classes, straight A's last quarter). He was inducted into the Honor Society.

He continues to play trombone - both concert and jazz band - and has been chosen to participate in honor band and honor jazz band again. He received an excellent score on both his solo and ensemble for OMEA (New York translation: NYSSMA).

He still enjoys playing defense on a local soccer team, has an awesome goal kick, and is the one they call across the field to take every corner kick. Right now he is having fun playing indoor soccer, which is like ice hockey in terms of roughness, as well as using the wall as an active part of the play.

Zack has really stepped up in terms of helping his Dad around the house. He and Peter work together on most projects and chores. (Mom was very happy to fully relinquish that responsibility to him). He does most with a great attitude, and is learning a lot. Zack will be all set when he has his own house one day!

Jackie was very excited to start third grade this year, for many reasons. The top reason, by far, was the fact that she would finally get actual letter grades. She wanted to get A's! She took her very first test and was disappointed when it said 100% at the top. She wanted it to have an A on it, too. I assured her the letter grades would be on her report card.

Sure enough, Jackie got straight A+'s on her first quarter report card and she was beyond thrilled. Like her brother, Jackie has a math brain and loves math. Her teacher plays a competition game regarding math facts and Jackie has won it countless times.

Jackie played soccer in the spring season and is starting back in dance classes next month. She loves playing friends, but her favorite thing remains playing with Zack.

Monty, after sleeping pretty much continuously for the last three years, finally woke up a few months ago. He has always loved Jackie, but they've gotten even closer now. They can often be found snuggling wherever she is.

Monty has reverted to some kitten-like behaviors - jumping up on the table and knocking glasses over and playing with toys in the middle of the night. Jackie likes cats so much that coupled with her insistence that she still will never get married, we fear she'll be one of those crazy cat ladies with 20 cats living with her.

Peter recently fell in love again with salt water fish. We've had a big fresh water fish tank for years, but this fall he decided he wanted to set up an additional tank for salt water fish. He ended up setting it up in his office and gets endless delight taking care of the fish, doing partial water changes, and checking the water levels like a chemist. He has clown fish, green chromis, a scooter blenny, a royal gramma, snails, horseshoe crab, hermit crab, and a few random starfish and worms that hitched a ride in the live rock he bought.

This has been the year of getting our lives in order. In September we decided to get healthy and started a weight loss challenge, complete with exercising together at 6am, watching what we eat, weekly weigh-ins and an excel chart on the fridge documenting the pounds lost. We tend to be pretty motivated by competition, so we had high hopes.

Peter officially won the first round of competition by being the first to lose 20 pounds. As of the writing of this newsletter, he has lost a total of 23 pounds! Charlotte is lagging behind at a respectful, but inferior, 11 pounds. She tried to skew the competition by suggesting we calculate percentage of body weight instead, but she lost on that front as well. We are now in Phase 2 of the competition and neither of us is giving up.

We've also been working on our financial health. In January we were introduced to Dave Ramsey by some friends. We drank the Ramsey kool-aid and have accomplished a monumental shift in all things financial in our household, that we never thought was possible. Peter hasn't stopped doing projects around the house, he's just gotten more aware of the costs involved and is very careful in planning them out.

This year Charlotte is teaching at the same school, same position as last year. What a treat! The beginning of the year goes much more smoothly when you are not learning a whole new school, curriculum and kids.

She had half of her thyroid removed over the summer and has a scar that elicits the following types of questions from her students: "Did they cut your head off?" and "What did they do with your other head?"

Charlotte ha's been greatly influenced by TLC shows this year - specifically Extreme Couponing and Cake Boss. The whole family started couponing together in May. Are we Extreme Couponers? Well, Zack refers to us as Moderate Couponers. Yes, we've got a pretty big stockpile. Yes, we get stuff for free every week. No, we don't dumpster dive. No, we don't buy 500 containers of pickled herring that we don't eat. We have actually resurrected our old site, www.couponmadness.com as a blog for people interested in couponing.
Charlotte found out it's a lot easier to watch Buddy make cakes than try to make them herself. She did make one for each of Zack, Jackie and Peter's birthdays and then retired. She will NOT be quitting her day job!

Well, that's the latest with us. What's new with you? Drop us an e-mail to [email protected] - we'd love to hear from you!
Or better yet, let us know if you're ever out our way - we love visitors - and you could be featured in next year's newsletter!

Best wishes for a wonderful, happy & healthy 2012!

Love,
Peter, Charlotte, Zachary & Jackie

P.S. Forgive the tackiness but since we have officially decided we will not be spending eternity resting in peace on Long island, we have 2 cemetery plots in beautiful Pinelawn Cemetery that we are trying to sell. Given that we bought them 10+ years ago, they are a GREAT deal compared to today's prices. If you know anyone who would be interested in them, please let me know! Thanks!
