It's time once again for our update on all the activities and adventures the Elia Family has been up to this year! Check out the information and pictures below to find out what is new with us. You can click on any picture to see a larger version.

We hope that all is well with you and your family. Have a great holiday season and best wishes for a wonderful new year!

Zachary is 12 years old and in 7th grade. This year he started junior school (AKA middle school). Not only did he transition effortlessly, but he loves it! He's secured his place on the High Honor Roll while taking the full offering of all honors courses. He continues to play soccer, piano and trombone. He has great friends and has recently discovered the joys of texting.

SCHOOL & FRIENDS
Zack is enjoying the independence that junior school brings and is handling it well. In general he is a very responsible kid and easily manages to stay on top of the lengthy and involved projects that are required. Thankfully he learned how to type this past summer, so Mom doesn't have to type them for him! He maintains a nice balance that allows him to get all his homework done, but still play with friends after school almost every day that he doesn't have soccer. He has kept several good friends from last year and befriended several new ones this year. He seems to attract "good kids" so we are happy about that!

An unexpected perk of junior school is the cafeteria which has multiple choices every day including mozzarella sticks, pizza, cheeseburgers and french fries. Quite a change from having only one lunch choice in elementary school. Zack was enjoying lunch so much that he went through nearly $100 in the first month!!!

Zack chooses to wake up an hour early in the morning (taking after his dad) in order to have time to read and chill out before school (taking after his mom). If only he would use that time for good, like making breakfast for the family!

TROMBONE
Zachary continues to play the trombone this year, much to our delight. Being band geeks ourselves, Peter and I are glad to see him enjoying it too. In addition to Concert Band, he also auditioned, and was selected, for Jazz Band.

A few weeks ago he auditioned for Honor Band, which is a band made up of kids from four counties. In addition to scales and a rehearsed piece, the audition also required him to sight-read a piece he had never seen before. He did awesome and was selected to participate. His band teachers are very proud because this is a big accomplishment.

We need to give a special thank you to our friend Kyle who gave Zack an extra trombone so that he could leave one at school and keep one at home. With all the practicing he does it is a huge advantage and saves Zack from lugging such a big instrument back and forth every day. Thanks, Kyle!

Both kids are still playing piano and making great progress. Much to Peter's delight Zack has recently started learning some basic Beatles and Billy Joel songs. I'm not sure if Zack prefers them over the classical pieces, but we get a kick out of hearing them!

Jackie is 7 years old and in 2nd grade. This year Jackie moved from the primary school (PreK-1st grade) to an elementary school (2nd - 6th grade). As always, she is a teacher's dream! She continues to dance, play soccer and take piano lessons. She loves to draw, paint and make jewelry. She and Monty are inseparable and are often found lounging together reading or watching TV.

SCHOOL & FRIENDS
This year, for many reasons, we decided to open-enroll Jackie in the elementary school where I teach. It is in the same district, but we have 10 elementary schools and it is not the school she would normally attend. Jackie and mom drive to school together. There are a few other "teachers' kids" in the building and she has a nice friend Abby with whom she spends most of her time before and after school.

Jackie has fabulous teachers and is excelling again this year. She is reading and doing math well above her grade level. Like her brother, learning new things come pretty easily to Jackie. She loves her new school, which looks a bit like a castle, and is at the age where she still likes having her mom around. We have a standing lunch date every Wednesday in the cafeteria which is great fun, but loud!

Jackie has met several nice girls at school and has become an expert at the monkey bars on the playground. She is a very confident and independent little girl.

At this time Jackie still wants to be a teacher when she grows up.

  GIRLIE-GIRL vs. TOM-BOY
Jackie loves shopping at Justice and Claire's. Oh, and Game Stop and Target. Also Hobby Lobby and Michael's. OK, she just likes shopping in general.

Despite being as girlie as she is, Jackie asked for toads for her birthday. Toads! She got two fire-belly toads that now live in her room. She named them Princess and Hopper. Of course she refuses to handle the live crickets which are their food, but thankfully her brother is kind enough to feed them for her. She is lucky since her mother certainly wouldn't take that job!

She asks for presents like Barbies, but then spends her play time with legos and Game Boy. We are sure this is related to the fact that these are activities Zack is willing to participate in with her, and she always wants to play and spend time with him.

Peter continues to be an awesome dad. He loves spending time with the kids and they love being with him. As usual, he is the one who drags us out of the house to do all sorts of new, fun things. Even though he got a concussion at the Ohio Caverns (his 3rd one, by the way), most of these excursions have been a great success. In all fairness, he completed the 2 mile underground walk after concussing himself and a good time was had by all. Since the effects of concussions are cumulative, we are trying to avoid #4. It has been suggested by friends that he wear a helmet at all times.

ACTIVIES
This year Peter has orchestrated lots of fun activities for us, including exploring caverns, snow board / skiing, bike trails, camping in the backyard and hockey games (Cincinnati Cyclones). He plays soccer, fishes, shreds his voice at Guitar Hero and plays games. He is a fun dad!

HOUSE PROJECTS

As usual Peter is busy with projects around the house. This year he ripped out the half-wall that separated the kitchen from the family room. This project really opened up the space - we love it! Peter includes the kids in his projects - what kind of crazy person gives a 7 year old girl a crowbar?!?!? Peter, that's who!

Peter decided to tackle his first tiling project, the kitchen backsplash, and had great success. I'm sure he would mention that this success was due in large part to the assistance of his lovely wife as lead measurer. He is looking forward to utilizing his newly acquired tiling skills again soon for some bathroom work.

This year I was offered a full-time teaching job which I accepted despite my love of working part-time. This new job necessitated me changing schools within our district and I now have a sweet 7 minute commute. Not quite Peter's commute (he works from home), but still not bad. In other news: with encouragement from my friend Liz, I took up running. We ran all summer, and completed a 5K in August! Unfortunately I then stopped running, but hopefully I'll pick it back up soon!

TEACHING
This year I am teaching 2nd and 3rd grade special education, full-time, in a resource room type setting. I am soooo much busier than I was last year teaching inclusion kindergarten part-time. As busy as I am, I love it. I have a fabulous group of students, with few behavior problems. (One kid thought it would be funny to call me Mrs. Alien at the beginning of the year, but even he & I are getting along well now.) My school is intense but wonderful.

I share my classroom with Sarah who teaches 3rd and 4th graders. We work collaboratively and help all of our combined students. We approach things quite differently at times but our personalities work well together.

In my college days Phonics was a dirty word. The "ph" word... get it???? (teacher humor). Anyway, I had no formal training to teach phonics and found myself ill-equipped to do so at the beginning of this year. One frustrated day I asked Sarah, "What the heck is a diphthong anyway?!?!?" No worries, I've come a long way and have good evaluations to prove it!

Below are pictures of me, Sarah and our classroom. Most of the stuff in it is Sarah's, but I am slowly accumulating my own collection of materials.

It's been a fun year! We've done lots of stuff, had fun with our friends and taken some trips. I don't have pictures of all of it, but here are some.

Right after Christmas we are heading up to Peter's sister's house for some professional snowboarding lessons by Uncle Jack and Cousin Jake. Hopefully I'll get some good pictures for next year's chronicles!

Or better yet, let us know if you're ever out our way - we love visitors - and you could be featured in next year's newsletter!

Best wishes for a wonderful, happy & healthy 2011!

Love,
Peter, Charlotte, Zachary & Jackie

P.S. Forgive the tackiness but since we have officially decided we will not be spending eternity resting in peace on Long island, we have 2 cemetery plots in beautiful Pinelawn Cemetery that we are trying to sell. Given that we bought them 10 years ago, they are a GREAT deal compared to today's prices. If you know anyone who would be interested in them, please let me know! Thanks!
